Prompted to contrast the two as much as possible, Neil opines that “Hold Your Fire is somehow a little more introvert in mood, musically and lyrically, as much as they tend to feed on each other. That definitely strikes me now, just thinking about it. Power Windows is more dynamic and more extrovert, while Hold Your Fire is more textural and introvert, both lyrically and musically. But I like them equally in their two moods. Power Windows really hangs together well as a whole body of work, I think, the way it’s shaped. Running order is something we’ve always spent a lot of time and debate on. And I think it’s a great running order on this; from top to bottom, I think it’s a really good performance. Nope, I like that one.”

Fan reaction was particularly guarded, many finding the album too high-tech, too glossy, not guitar-crunched enough. Indeed, Power Windows was spiced liberally with electronics from both Geddy (synths inextricably linked to the ’80s) and Neil, with his percussion samples. Neil concurs. “Those two albums were very much embroiled in all that. We were working with Peter Collins, who was equally ambitious as a producer and arranger and song designer in a lot of ways. And we were working with a keyboard player, Andy Richards [Strawbs, Trevor Horn, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Propaganda], in England at that time who was king of the flourishes and the dramatic moments and all of that.”
